Q. How do I know if I need therapy?
A. If you have tried to overcome the particular issue on your own without success then therapy can be helpful. It can be beneficial to speak with a well trained and objective person who can help you sort through the issue and guide you through the process until the issue is resolved and you feel better.
Q. How long will I need to be in therapy?
A. Therapy can last as short as several sessions or up to several years. Each situation is unique, however, most people find relief within several months.
Q. How did I pick the right psychologist?
A. This is a crucial decision. It is important to find a psychologist with whom you feel most comfortable. You are encouraged to ask questions about the psychologist's training, education and approach to working with clients. Most psychologists are willing to have you come into their office for an initial consultation and explore if it will be the right fit for you.
Q. What happens in the therapy office?
A. You will meet with one of our psychologists in a comfortable office for approximately 50 minutes. During each session you will be encouraged to talk about the issue that led you to seek therapy. The psychologist will both listen and ask questions in an attempt to understand you and the nature of the problem. Through these discussions the psychologist will begin to formulate an approach and guide you toward better understanding the issues and helping you feel better.
Q. Will anyone know that I am in therapy or what I am discussing?
A. Psychologists must abide by strict standards of confidentiality. This means that the psychologist must protect your privacy and not reveal to anyone your involvement in therapy. There are extreme situations in which psychologists are required by law to break confidentiality. Your psychologist will explain these circumstances prior to starting therapy with you.
